Copenhagen setlist

29.04.2006 -- The Rock, Copenhagen, Denmark [120 min]
Attendance: 350
Soundcheck
: You Lose, Are You Ready?, Bonny Lee (partial?)
Set: Critical Mass, Sail On, Triggerman, In Our Tree, Neverland, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Hyena, Coalmine Pony, Bonny Lee -> The Wheel, Plan #1

Notes: An intimate show in a cosy venue. The general sound tonight is excellent, unfortunately the vibraphone is inaudible for many songs. Bent wears a football shirt again. "Critical mass" starts off a little subdued but picks up drive during a floating Snah solo & eventually manages to greatly open this focused show. Just as the previous shows this concert tends heavily towards the new material. The new songs are being delivered with great drive, confidence & power. Bent looks very content with "his" players, he is still giving detailed cues to the band. "Triggerman" features two solos: first we get the jazzy vibes & then a quiet, deep Snah-part. "Neverland" receives a huge cheer from the crowd. The first real mindblowing highlight of the concert is an insanely powerful version of "Kill Devil Hills": the band keeps repeating the massive riff over & over again, supported by great video-projections of exploding bombs seen through a Pentagon satellite, just like the footage from the first Gulf War -- a moment of genuine "S.T.G."-like proportions. Then they totally turn the quiet outro upside down & make this a droning feedback part that fluently leads into "Devil dog" . Wow! "Bonny Lee" (12 min) rocks very hard before the band takes it down to a very quite space which directly segues into "The wheel" (20 min). There is no encore tonight due to a 1 am curfew at the venue. On the setlist as encore but not played: "You lied".

Thanks to Michael Wurzer (jtr) for the soundcheck & setlist documentation -- see you tomorrow!

Motorpsycho will play Rostock in about three hours!

Gone to see four shows

Today I will join the tour for four consecutive dates: Copenhagen, Rostock, Berlin & Hamburg. I don't know when or how I'll be able to update MotorpsychoNews while on the road so there might not be an update until tuesday, though I will try my best to post a setlist & some notes sometime, somewhere.

In the meantime you can check the setlists in the UnOff's setlistforum as well as by subscribing to the Motorpsycho mailing list g35. Past 2006 setlists can be found in the 2006 Concert Chronology. Contributions of all kinds (corrections, notes, reviews, pics, scans, sounds) are very welcome & appreciated -- thanks to everyone who contributed so far!

Here is also a cool interview with Jacco -- a suggested reading (there is an English translation).

I am off to catch the plane to Copenhagen now -- see you on the road somewhwere!

Later.

Halden setlist

27.04.2006 -- Samfundet, Halden, Norway [120 min]

Attendance: 250
Soundcheck:
a song by Twisted Sister
Set
: Sideway Spiral lll, In Our Tree, No Evil -> Kill Devil Hills, Sancho Says, Coalmine Pony, Triggerman, L.T.E.C. -> Tristano, 29th Bulletin, Devil Dog -> Hyena, You Lied
Encore 1: Kill Some Day, You lose

Notes: A superb show with a chrystal clear sound! This is a good week-day crowd in an intimate venue. The gig starts at 21:30 with only around 10 people present in the beginning, so Bent talked for a long time in order to get people into the concert hall. Everybody smiles, with Bent being in a particular good mood today, making jokes about his football shirt. Jacco playes the concert of his life -- he is everywhere, almost smashing the cymbals to pieces. "Kill devil hills" is the noisy version again & "Sancho says" contains a long spaced out jam. The transition between "L.T.E.C." & "Tristano" is fluent & nice. This is "Tristano"'s tour debut. It is a very good version, quite spaced out yet very tight, it runs for 15 minutes. During the drum-break of "You lied" Jacco takes takes it down to a bossanova rythm & plays it for a while, very much to the suprise of Bent & Snah who started staring at Jacco with an akward frown on their faces, and at the same time putting their arms accross their chests like they were saying "What the hell are you doing, man!". Suddenly they all burst into laughter and Jacco made an elegant transition back to the song. Bent also introduces Jacco to the audience at this point. Great soloing in most songs! In terms of tightness this show outplayed the previous one at Rockefeller.

Many thanks to Martin, Gustav & Gaute. Picture taken by Gustav -- thanks a lot!

Rockefeller setlist

26.04.2006 -- Rockefeller Music Hall, Oslo, Norway [140 min]
Soundcheck: Summertime blues, Are you ready?, Hogwash, In our tree
Set: Sancho Says, Sail On, Hogwash, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Vanishing Point, Neverland, Critical Mass, The Ace, You Lied, Hyena, Devil Dog, Un chien d'espace -> Plan #1
Encore 1: Kill Devil Hills, Triggerman
Encore 2: Before The Flood

Notes: Motorpsycho's 18th performance at the Rockefeller. A great show which sold out months in advance! The sound varies, sometimes being really terrible & thus ruining some songs. As the band hits the stage for the first time and starts playing one could easily see that Pidah was not pleased: started twisting knobs and working the levels right away, picked up a pair of headphones too. At one point Bent said to the audience, "Do you hear anything except bass?" And after a couple of songs a clearly annoyed Bent says he "didn't hear anything except the bassdrum in his monitor". Snah adds "Må skru litt lyd no/work some sound". From "Un chien d'espace" on the sound improves. Generally the band plays at earshattering volume. "Hogwash" is long & spacy & features a fantastic solo part by Snah & Øyvind. During "The Ace" hilarious videos of Bent & Snah doing dogfights as pilots during World War II are being shown. "Vanishing point" is introduced by Bent as "here's a song about a car". This is a great crowd tonight who is dead-silent dring the quiet parts of "Un chien d'espace", quite a rarity for a show in Norway. The "Un chien d'espace">"Plan #1" combo lasted for 33 minutes (the highlight of the evening), with a psychedelic build-up during "Un chien". "Triggerman" has the five minute bluesy/jazzy jam again, which is vaguely reminiscent of "This otherness". Snah really shines during "Before the flood", which ends the show with style. Fans' reactions to the show were mixed though, ranging from "amazing" & "a show like in the good old days" to "boring" & "too few old songs".

Hamar setlist

UPDATE: Now confirmed: Grand Funk Railroad's "Are you ready?" was played as opener.

Encore 1: Before the Flood

Notes: This is just a setlist approximation, the running order might be mixed up & one or two songs could be missing (new songs). A set with ups & downs. "Bonny Lee" lasts 20 minutes & is very spaced out. Tour debut of "SWS III".

motorpsycho -Blissard Tour '96 (ticket for Berlin 25.04.1996)

Exactly ten years ago today I attended my first Motorpsycho concert at Berlin's Knaack Club. As a matter of fact this was also my very first contact with the band -- I had not heard or read anything by or about the band yet, there were neither expectations or pre-occupations, I was all "blank canvas" towards the band & its music. Now, May 2006, I will attend my 33rd concert by the band in four days' time -- so this seems like the right moment to look back & dig for some memories in order to celebrate this personal anniversary of mine.

In 1996 I was still very much the typical kid of the early 1990s: Bands & music from Seattle ruled my musical universe back then. Pearl Jam was (and still remains) the one and favourite band of mine, many famous & less famous contemporary fellow Seattle bands could be found on my record shelf as well. Having grown up with parents who used to listen to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen & Neil Young at the breakfast table my autobiographically first (and most important) musical passion was & is the music of the late 1960s. Apart from the classic late 1960s psychedelia I wasn't listening to a lot of space-rock yet.

I don't know what made me check out Motorpsycho that day but something about the very short pre-view in the city magazine Zitty had me intrigued (I wish I had kept that article). So much that i actually skipped the very first concert of a band of friends of mine (Harder They Come) in favour of Motorpsycho at the Knaack just five minutes down the street. Well, Harder They Come have long been disbanded but Motorpsycho are currently in the 17th year of their carreer...

Luckily I had purchased a ticket beforehand, because when I arrived to the scene at Knaack the place was sold out & tightly packed. Most of my memories blur, but I remember being thoroughly impressed by the focus & the devotion of the band. All I could make out were three crazy long-haired Scandinavian guys bent forwards over their instruments, not looking up, creating a mindblowing sea of sounds. Of course I didn't know any songs, so the crucial point for me was when the band went into the most incredible version of "All is loneliness", a song I knew & loved all too well from Janis Joplin's repertoire. The fact that they choose "All is loneliness" to cover had me raving to my friends for weeks. Little did I know back then about "The house at Pooneil corners" or "California dreaming" for example. They had instantly won me over with this very mix of "contemporary guitar rock" & Sixties influences.

They played following set:
Starmelt/lovelight, Wearing yr smell, Nothing to say, Sinful wind-borne, Shrug & fistful, Heartattack Mac -> True middle -> All is loneliness -> Plan #1, Flick of the wrist // S.T.G., Greener, The one who went away

Too bad I wasn't familiar with the band's repertoire because looking at the setlist now it seems like a dream-setlist indeed. Judging by a fan recording of the show (which I first heard five years after the show) the performance did stand out as well, though that is a tough judgment to make since they stormed through most 1996 sets with equal power & inspiration.

The next day I bought the "Timothy's monster" 3LP box (after having bought the "Mad sun" 7" at the show itself). Curiously enough it took me a while to get into both items, especially "Timothy's" proved to be not easily accessible for this new fan. I would have probably been better off (and more easily convinced) had I bought "Blissard". I was, however, fascinated strongly enough to not miss a future show & grow into a hardcore-fan by the time "Trust us" was released. Ten years later, as I find myself updating this blog, Motorpsycho is one of the bands/artists I have developped the strongest love & bond for, alongside with Pearl Jam, Grateful Dead & Neil Young they rightfully conquered their very own place in my heart as my most favourite & adored musicians.

Looking at the incredible setlists of the current tour it seems as if this isn't going to change anytime soon. I am anxiously anticipating my first of five shows during this tour on saturday. There is nothing better than the most familiar & best loved feelings of them all: when the band walks on stage...

You can download the Berlin 1996 show here, there is no sign-up required.

The return of "K9"

More touring expected

A couple of days ago Adressa.no had this article about Motorpsycho kicking off their tour in Trondheim. It concludes:

"Motorpsycho is gonna play 25 shows during the spring & summer, most of them in Germany, Netherlands & Italy. In the autumn comes a bigger Norwegian tour, but Trondheim, Oslo, Halden & Hamar gets a psycho-visit already this spring."

Since the spring tour tour encompasses 19 shows there are theoretically six shows left to be played in the summer. Two of them -- at the Øya- & Haldern Pop Festivals -- are already confirmed.

The band will play the second of two Trondheim shows tonight. See the first night's setlist here & the rest of the tourdates here.

Trondheim setlist

22.04.2006 -- Samfundet, Trondheim, Norway [140 min?]
Set: No Evil -> Hey Jane, Hogwash, Triggerman, Sancho Says, Sail On, Coalmine Pony, Neverland, Kill Devil Hills, 29th Bulletin, L.T.E.C.
Encore 1: The Wheel -> Plan #1
Encore 2: In Our Tree, You Lied -> Hyena, Kill Some Day

Notes: First show of the tour. Jacco van Rooij on drums, Øyvind Brandtsegg on vibraphone. After "L.T.E.C." the show was interrupted for 30 minutes by a false fire alarm (which has happened before during other shows at this venue). "Triggerman" features a jam, "Coalmine pony" a vibraphone solo. "The wheel" is very long & jammed out. First performances of "Plan #1" & "Kill some day" since 2000.

Download two short but fairly descriptive video clips from the show here & here! You can tell the band is making a hell lot of noise & the optics are astounding!

2006 Concert Chronology Part I

Visit the MotorpsychoNews main page by clicking here!

Here I'll post & update setlists & significant info on the shows. This post aims towards a comprehensive 2006 concert chronology that gathers as much & as detailed information on the shows as possible. All the information contained within this document has been collected from a variety of sources: fan's posts to message boards & mailings lists (namely the UnOff's board & g35), eye-witness reports that have been submitted to me via e-mail, recordings of the shows, setlists, reviews etc.

If you want to contribute information, corrections, notes, reviews, pictures, sounds, videos, setlist- or ticket-scans or anything else you feel is worth adding e-mail me!

Thank you to all who contributed!

Check out the dates for the spring 2006 tour here.

22.04.2006 -- Samfundet, Trondheim, Norway [140 min?]
Soundcheck: Un Chien d'espace?
Set: No Evil -> Hey Jane, Hogwash, Triggerman, Sancho Says, Sail On, Coalmine Pony, Neverland, Kill Devil Hills, 29th Bulletin, L.T.E.C.
Encore 1: The Wheel -> Plan #1
Encore 2: In Our Tree, You Lied -> Hyena -> Kill Some Day

Notes: First show of the tour. Tickets to the show sold out months in advance. Jacco van Rooij on drums, Øyvind Brandtsegg on vibraphone. Jacco's drumkit is placed next to Bent & Øyvind's vibes are placed next to Snah. Since this is the very first show of this line-up Bent is giving all players cues. There are very eloborate video-projections/graphics on a screen behind the stage. The video/graphics were made with several video cameras & a Mac laptop loaded with still images & stuff, plus various other electronic (video processing?) equipment. All of this is obviously interconnected so that the video guy can choose what to use, what/how to combine what with, effects, distortion, etc., e.g. at times one camera was directed at Bent, and some effects were added, or a picture (or many) superimposed onto that, while other electronic devices obviously helped distort the image additionally. Other times lots of still images in a quick slideshow were used, many of them taken from contemporary media like CNN. The "BH/BC"-material debuts. During the "L.T.E.C."-jam the show was interrupted for 30 minutes by a false fire alarm (which has happened before during other shows at this venue). After the alarm when the band returns to play the first encore they up the energy several notches. Bent wears a Melvins shirt. "Triggerman" features a slow jam, "Coalmine pony" a jazzy vibraphone solo (making Bent comment on Øyvind's classical training at Trondheim's music conservatory). The outro of "Kill devil hills" is noisy as opposed to the quiet one on the album. "The wheel" is very long, supposedly 30 mins. It evolves from a very slow jam & climaxes in a heavy noise-fest before it segues into "Plan #1" (for many the highlight of the night). Before the second hard-rocking encore Bent remarks while he was tuning about something that Nazarath once said: "It's tuned good enough for rock'n'roll!". "Plan #1" was played the last time at Rockefeller 19.10.2000, "Kill some day" in Stavanger 17.10.2000.

24.04.2006 -- Samfundet, Trondheim, Norway [120 min]
Set: Space -> Devil Dog, Vanishing Point, Coalmine Pony, Critical Mass, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Kill Some Day, Kill Devil Hill -> Triggerman, Un Chien D'Espace, Before the Flood -> You Lose
Encore 1: In Our Tree, Ace, You Lied -> Hyena

Notes: This show did not sell out. Space opens the show (a mix of sounds from the PA & live sounds?) & leads seamlessly to "Devil dog". "Un chien d'espace" (~20 min) returns to a setlist for the first time since it has last been played in Milano, September 02nd, 2000! Live debuts of "Devil dog", "Critical mass", "Before the flood", "You lose" & "Ace". This night is plagued by a rather bad sound, just as the previous show, making the instruments' sound blur into each other.

Misc.: discuss

25.04.2006 -- Hydranten, Hamar, Norway [100 min?]
Set: Are you ready?, Bonny Lee, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Sail On, Neverland, 29th Bulletin, Kill Devil, Hills, Triggerman, Sideway Spiral III, Critical Mass, In Our Tree, Hyena, You Lied, The Ace
Encore 1: Before the Flood

Notes: Setlist might be slightly out of order & incomplete. The sound & atmosphere at the venue do not satisfy & the set has ups & downs. "Are you ready?" is a Grand Funk Railroad cover; it was only played once before, in Strasbourg, November 08, 2002 (as opener too). "Bonny Lee" lasts 20 minutes & is very spaced out. Tour debut of "SWS III". "29th bulletin" is intense. "Hyena" is quite a crowd pleaser before Jacco, while tight so far, messes up the "You lied" drum-break (intentionally?).

Misc.: discuss, two pictures

26.04.2006 -- Rockefeller Music Hall, Oslo, Norway [140 min]
Attendance: 1500
Soundcheck: Summertime blues, Are you ready?, Hogwash, In our tree

27.04.2006 -- Samfundet, Halden, Norway
Attendance: 250
Soundcheck: a song by Twisted Sister?
Set: Sideway Spiral lll, In Our Tree, No Evil -> Kill Devil Hills, Sancho Says, Coalmine Pony, Triggerman, L.T.E.C.

Jacco plays the concert of his life -- he is everywhere, almost smashing the cymbals to pieces. "Kill devil hills" is the noisy version again & "Sancho says" contains a long spaced out jam. Suddenly they all burst into laughter and Jacco made an elegant transition back to the song. Bent also introduces Jacco to the audience at this point. Great soloing in most songs! In terms of tightness this show outplayed the previous one at Rockefeller.

29.04.2006 -- The Rock, Copenhagen, Denmark [120 min]
Support: The River Phoenix
Attendance: 350
Soundcheck: You Lose, Are You Ready?, Bonny Lee (partial?)

Then they totally turn the quiet outro upside down & make this a droning feedback part that fluently leads into "Devil dog" -- this is the first time they perform this combination. Wow! Bent attempts his classic Jefferson Airplane line "You've seen the heavy groups..." (Woodstock) between "Hyena" & "Coalmine pony" but he interrupts himself & says "Welcome to the dog & pony show, you heard the dog, now...". "Bonny Lee" (12 min) rocks very hard before the band takes it down to a very quiet space which directly segues into "The wheel" (20 min). There is no encore tonight due to a 1 am curfew at the venue. On the setlist as encore but not played: "You lied".

Misc.: setlist scan, ticket-scan, discuss, Gaffa.dk article & review w/ three pics from the show

30.04.2006 -- Mau Club, Rostock, Germany [130 min]
Attendance: 250 - 300
Soundcheck
: Are You Ready?, In Our Tree, Peggy Sue, plus one or two unidentified songs off of "BH/BC"
Set: Space -> Un chien d'espace, Sideway Spiral III, Sail On, No Evil, Critical Mass, Coalmine Pony, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Kill Some Day, In our Tree, You lied -> Hyena
Encore 1: Hogwash

Notes: This night is pure magic -- the stuff Motorpsycho dreams are made of. This is Motorpsycho's first show in Rostock. The atmosphere at the venue is very intimate. This is a totally different band from the night before, the new line-up finally clicks at this masterful concert. They take the stage & create a qiet little space that leads to the intro of "Un chien d'espace". It's a spacy 25 minute version with a heavily driven build-up. The audience holds their breath until the last notes have faded away & bursts out in deafening applause, they're at the band's feet from now on. An equally space-driven "SWS III" rounds off the fantastic opening of the show. The great vibes continue with spot-on renditions of "Sail on" (smoking solo), "No evil", an extended "Critical mass" & "Coalmine pony" (dirty 1970s rocker with cool vibraphone jazz solo) before "Kill devil hills" -> "Devil dog" brings the space back into the show. They come back for the encore to perform a 20 minute "Hogwash". This version goes really abstract & spooky places, feedback & nasty guitar-hooks dominate the jam before they take it down to play with the pedals to create yet more space. At one point Bent places his bass upon his amplifier & leaves the stage letting the others continue the at this point very quiet & transcendent jam. Snah introduces a sweet theme upon which Øyvind plays beautiful Sigor Rós-like vibes. After two minutes of playing as a trio the rest of the band leaves the stage one by one leaving the instruments humming away. "Hogwash" stays unfinished (it would be finished the next day in Berlin). The audience screams, hollers, whistles & demands a "Zugabe" for another ten minutes but the band won't come out for a second time. On the setlist as encore but not played: "Before the flood" (with "Hogwash" being the main set closer). A dream of a show!

Misc.: setlist scan, discuss, Thorsten Schmidt's tour review for Intro.de

01.05.2006 -- Postbahnhof, Berlin, Germany [145 min]
Attendance: 1200 (sold out)
Set: Sideway Spiral III, No Evil -> Hey Jane, In Our Tree, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, 29th Bulletin, Vanishing Point, Neverland, Triggerman, Before The Flood -> Bonny Lee -> Hogwash, Plan #1
Encore 1: You lied --> Hyena
Encore 2: Space -> Un Chien D'Espace

Notes: What everyone thought to be impossible the band managed to do this night: to raise the energy yet again & to surpass the magic Rostock show with a hard rocking & spacy concert. Reportedly they were very content with the Rostock set the day before & were just getting warmed up enough to confidently space out with this new line up. This is the first time the band
performs at Postbahnhof. The audience is great, even less talking than in Rostock although the crowd is three times as big. The band is in the mood to rock out tonight. There is a killer jam inside a 15 minute version of "Triggerman" highlighted by some sweet Snah solo, that is much more inspired than the previous version played in Copenhagen. "Before the flood" is raw & long. Towards the end of the very long & hard-rocking "Bonny Lee"-jam the band fluently goes into "Hogwash"-funk-mode & delivers the first verse & the chorus before reprising parts of the lyrics for an unique outro. The song had been left unfinished the day before & they spontaneously reprise it today, it was not on the written setlist. "You lied">"Hyena" brings the house down & the great crowd goes nuts with a huge sing-along on the former, giving the band big smiles. Everyone feels very honoured to get "Un chien d'espace" as second encore & the whole place listens devoudly. It's a 25 min heavy rendition, featuring an extremely angry psycho-funk monster jam in the middle. At one point Jacco confidently takes charge of the jam. Snah's guitar is seriously out of tune at the end, so he has to struggle to get the notes right (and he fails in the very outro). On the setlist but not played: "You lose". A giant concert!

Misc.: setlist scan, discuss, 19 minutes of video excerpts, short Tagesspiegel review (German), Thorsten Schmidt's tour report for Intro.de

02.05.2006 -- Fabrik, Hamburg, Germany [120 min]
Attendance: 800
Set: Critical Mass, In Our Tree, Triggerman, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Kill Some Day, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, 29th Bulletin, You Lose, You Lied -> Hyena, The Wheel
Encore 1: Before the flood

Notes: A solid show that features extremely good as well as more ordinary moments. Highlights include "Kill some day", "Kill devil hills", "29th bulletin", "The wheel" & a jammed out version of "You lose" (14 min). The venue is packed but the audience is less animated than in Berlin, there is a considerable amount of talking. "Triggerman" (12 min) features a group improvisation instead of the individual solos, easily the best version since Copenhagen. Quiet & jazzy "My best friend"-like improvisations intro & outro a massive 24 minute "The wheel" which is confidently built up & well thought out -- the coda is simply majestic. On the setlist but not played: "L.T.E.C." (between "Hyena" & "The wheel").

03.05.2006 -- Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands [135 min]
Attendance: 1200 (sold out)
Soundcheck: Sail On (and more?)
Set: Un Chien D'Espace, You Lose, Sail On, Triggerman, No Evil, Coalmine Pony, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog -> The Wheel -> Plan #1
Encore 1: Hyena -> You lied, Hogwash

Notes: A classic show. Bent is turned way up tonight. Superb opening with an intense far out "Un chien d'espace" that clocks in close to 30 minutes. After the quiet guitar intro they kick in with a bass sound which makes everything vibrate. The jam started out quietly, but the crowd and particularly the bar (they really need to close the bar during shows or at least move it out of the main hall) was extremely loud so they quickly poured on the heat and got into a fast and loud psychojam which was very long. This would somehow be an omen for the rest of the gig. The crowd simply would not shut up during the quiet parts so the jams were always fast and loud. It was a very rocking show. "Triggerman" has a long jam but is soon surpassed by the fantastic "Kill devil hills>Devil dog>The wheel>Plan #1" string. Long jams on former two, a pretty close to original "The wheel" which was given away instantly by Snah when he put on the guitar, only a handful of people reacted. Bent brings back the coda to "The wheel" with an intense scream that sends shivers down the spine. "Hyena" creates some moshing, but nowhere near the Berlin or Trondheim crowds and there is no singalong on "You Lied". The only song to get the crowd silent is "Hogwash". This is a heavier performance than Berlin and they perform a feedback session which is mindblowing, Bent on his knees providing us with feedback from his bass, Snah crawling into his own amp for feedback. Those stunning 20 minutes of spaced out noise during "Hogwash" complimented and completed the magic of the opnener, and wrapped the whole night up. A special night because of the hard jams caused by the crowd and a super setlist: who would have thought one would see "Un chien", "The Wheel", "Plan #1" and "Hogwash" back on the same setlist?! The lightshow does stand out tonight too.

04.05.2006 -- De Effenaar, Eindhoven, Netherlands [130 min?]
Attendance: 1200
Set: Sideway Spiral III, Kill Some Day, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Triggerman, Sail On, The Ace, Manmower -> Devil Dog, L.T.E.C. -> Un Chien D'Espace
Encore 1: Hyena -> You lied
Encore 2: Sheer Heart Attack

Notes: Quite a special show tonight: Motorpsycho play the Effenaar for the 11th time, Eindhoven is Jacco's & Pidah's hometown & in addition they did mix "BH/BC" here. This is the first time though the band performs at the newly built Effenaar, which is a rather soulless concrete hall but the sound & the sights are very good. They honour the occasion with a special setlist: "Manmower" makes its tour debut tonight (last time played: Berlin 27.04.2000), "The Ace" & "L.T.E.C." haven't been played in six respectively five shows (since Norway) & the Queen cover "Sheer heart attack" is a drummer's choice & is played for the very first time. The crowd is less chatty than the one at Paradiso the night before. The band doesn't really come together until "Triggerman", from there on they're hot. Before "Manmower" Bent mentions they are about to play something they haven't played in a long time, so he has to use some notes in front of him, which he does not consider professional. They perform a 10+ minute version of it: about 3/4 of the song, then a mellow jam based on the song's riff & just about when everyone starts wondering what song they are going to play into, they return to finish the song and only then played it into "Devil dog". After some serious improvising "L.T.E.C." is taken down until the jam drops dead (crowd starts talking) & then they go into the intro to a 25 minute "Un chien d'espace". The jam inside starts out fast and furious and progresses from there. Jacco plays a fast Krautrock rhythm, he goes on & on & on, while the other three guys were in complete outer space, very noisy & loud. Particularly Snah is on fire tonight, really really into whatever he was doing, extreme focus. Not surprisingly there is a full band introduction with Jacco getting the cheers he deserves from the home-town crowd. Before "Sheer heart attack" Bent says "Oh no, this is going to be weird". He goes on to deliver a long introduction telling the crowd to imagine Snah with a lot of curly black hair & Bent himself in tight leather jeans. He also references the song's version on "Live killers". On the setlist before "Hyena" but not played: "Kill devil hills" as well as "Before the flood" as second encore (with question mark).

05.05.2006 -- Skater's Palace, Münster, Germany [153 min]
Attendance: 1000
Set: You Lose, Sail On, Triggerman, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Bonny Lee -> Devil Dog, Manmower, Critical Mass, Kill Devil Hills -> The Ace, Feel, In Our Tree, Trixeene, Neverland, You Lied -> Hyena
Encore 1: Un Chien D'Espace

Notes: This is the first time the band performs at Skater's Palace & many fans felt this venue sucks because a large part (one third) of the crowd cannot see the stage & there is just one bar providing drinks for almost 1000 people. A super rocking show nonetheless, with a 30 minute "K9" as highlight, instantly a legendary version, charakterised by super-tight straight forward jamming & lots of Deathprod-ish noises & samples by Øyvind as climax before the conclusion. "Feel" & "Trixeene" make their tour-debut tonight. From the very first minute on one could tell that the band is on fire and in a very good mood, much joking between songs. Especially Jacco played one hell of a concert, much less cueing by Bent this time. "You lose" is hardly reconizable for the first five to seven minutes because the band jams their way into the tune creating a long awesome build-up. Says Bent after "You loose": "We are Motorpsycho and tonight you win". There are long jams in "Triggerman", "Bonny Lee" & "Critical mass". The "Bonny Lee">"Devil dog" combination lasts 24 minutes. Nice vibraphone work refines "Manmower" & "Feel", particularly "Manmower" is awesome: started out as expected but grew louder and louder from then on, quite a long (10 minutes) & great version. The "Neverland>You lied>Hyena" stretch is a crowd favourite. Members of the band (Bent, Snah, Øyvind) & the cew came out to talk to fans afterwards.

07.05.2006 -- Cirque Royal, Brussels, Belgium [133 min]
Support: Nervous Cabaret
Set: Un Chien D'Espace, Sideway Spiral III, Triggerman, Coalmine Pony, No Evil, Sail On, Manmower, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Hyena
Encore 1: L.T.E.C. -> Plan #1

Notes: A show in a beautiful venue attended by a very well-behaved, silent & attentive crowd. The band gels together with natural interplay between all players. Quite a psychedelic mood tonight, the jams dominate. "Un chien" clocks in 30 minutes. It has a very qiet three minute intro. The jam starts in a quiet pling-plong-like jazzy mood with Øyvind taking charge before they enter the build-up part. The ensueing space is among the weirdest music they have played during the 2006 "K9"s so far, there are some very deep, far out & abstract Kraut moments before Øyvind concludes this remarkable jam with a long solo-part which leads to the second verse -- breathtakingly beautiful, exiting & different! Says Bent: "This is just the first one , we got ten more to go through...". "Triggerman" lasts 13 beautiful minutes, during the long & inspired interlude Snah caresses soft & tender & otherworldy Grateful Dead-like scale progressions before they improvise as group & bring the tune back to the conclusion eventually. Despite the far out mood the rockers rock as good as in any other show, "Hyena" in particular earns the usual cheers. When the band returns for the encore the audience is hyped & screams various requests for songs. Then, before launching a groovy, yet spaced out, 23 min version of "L.T.E.C. Bent teases the into riff to "Superstooge"; at one point in the middle of the giant "L.T.E.C."-jam the structures completely dissolve into form-less abstract space for a couple of minutes until the band increases the volume & tempo again & embarks on another flight that strays far far away into unheard territority. On the setlist as second encore but not played: "The wheel".

08.05.2006 -- Live Music Hall, Köln, Germany [150 min?]
Attendance: 1200
Set: Sideway Spiral III, Sancho Says, Sail On, Coalmine Pony, Bonny Lee -> The Wheel, Feel, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Neverland, No Evil -> Hey Jane, You Lied -> Hyena
Encore 1: Manmower
Encore 2: Hogwash

Notes: A brilliant gig played in a hot & sweaty venue, in the end Bent is soaking wet from sweat like in the old club-days. "Sancho says" returns to a setlist, it has not been played since Halden (8 shows). The sound is spectacular and they all evidently enjoy playing this venue. They did change something on Bent's & Snah's equipment resulting in Snah being the loudest player tonight. The audience is way dedicated to the band: very silent, well-behaved & into the show even during the quieter parts and as soon as they recognize the next song being played from the new tunes there is big cheering all around because most of the people know all songs. Everyone seems to join in the singalong to the chorus of "You lied". Bent attempts his German before "Coalmine pony": "Dann wollen wir jazzen!". "Bonny Lee">"The wheel" is pure energy: after 15 minutes of building "The wheel" up they take it down as if to wrap up the jam but then Bent steps to the mic screaming & the riff kicks back in at full volume for another couple of minutes (similar to the Amsterdam version). Bent introduces "Manmower" saying this is "something really No Quarter-ish". This version runs for 15 incredible minutes! "Hogwash" starts out rocky but soon evolves into a full psychedelic trip that features great vibraphone work by Øyvind & what seems like an endless acceleration of the main guitar/bass riff: faster & faster & faster! Here Bent also delivers one of his favourite teases: at one point he throws in a couple of lines of Funkadelic's "Free your mind & your ass will follow". More highlights include great versions of "SWS III" & "Sancho says". On the setlist but not played: "Before The Flood" & "Vanishing point" (as first encore).

09.05.2006 -- Coupole, Biel, Switzerland [121 min]
Set: Triggerman, Sail On, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Before The Flood, Coalmine Pony, Kill Some Day, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Manmower, Bonny Lee, Plan#1
Encore 1: Hyena, You Lied, The Ace, Sheer Heart Attack
Encore 2: Feel

Notes: A very heavy show, very ROCK. The band is in great form & mood, very playful, though they seem to be a bit cautious to leave the fixed arrangements during the jams. The "Triggerman"-interlude, an extremely wonderful "Manmower" and the verses of "Plan #1" were among the only quiet parts of the show. "Sheer heart attack" makes a rare second appearance (after its debut in Eindhoven five days earlier). After a slow beginning with "Triggerman" Bent says something to the effect of "Ah great, we are awake now..." & then the band kicks off the show with "Sail On" and "Kill devil hills". They take "Bonny Lee" to some far out places where it has never been before. At that point of the show they were in trance, experimenting a lot, Øyvind adds sounds à la Deathprod back in the days. Quite a lot of (radical) setlist changes tonight: "Un chien d'espace" was on the setlist as first encore but wasn't played. As second encore the setlist stated "Hyena", "The Ace", "You lied". "Sheer heart attack" & "Feel" were not on the setlist. There was a special show-poster for sale at this concert.

10.05.2006 -- Rolling Stone, Milan, Italy [120 min]
Set: Sideway Spiral III, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Kill Devil Hills, Triggerman, In our tree, Sail On, 29th Bulletin, Bonny Lee, Sancho Says, Coalmine Pony, Before the flood
Encore 1: Vanishing Point, Neverland, You lied, Hyena
Encore 2: Feel

Notes: Setlist possibly slightly out of order. A rocking show which lacks major jams. Many hardcore fans were pissed off by the setlist & the lenght of the set. The venue is a crappy disco with a crappy sound & a drunken engineer apparently must have set the PA position (i.e.: issues with the FOH sound at times). The band themselves also appears to have problems hearing themselves occasionally: during one song ("In our tree"?) Bent presses his fingers to his ears & Snah was so out of tune one could think he was singing a different song. Consequently they lack some tightness today, i.e. they mess up "Hey, Jane" after a serious drum fuck-up. There is a curfew tonight forcing the band to cut the set short, that's why they omit "Ace" & "Kill some day" which were on the setlist before "Feel". They actually went on two minutes before the time printed on the tickets (21:00) and finished exactly two hours later with Bent's "That's all we have for tonight. Sorry.", definitely leaving the crowd thirsty for more. Reports about the crowd are mixed: while the majority is relatively well behaved, the usual talking during quiet parts & mobile-phone showing off is unfortunately there too. Bent actually has to tell the audience to calm down & be nice to each other during the "Bonny Lee"-jam! During the "Coalmine pony" vibraphone solo Bent & Snah stop playing letting the new guys do their own thing for a little while. Highlights of the concert include "SWS III", "Triggerman", "29th bulletin" as well as the entire first encore which is pure energy!

11.05.2006 -- Velvet, Rimini, Italy [160 min]
Set: Un Chien D'Espace, Sancho Says, Sail On, Triggerman, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Before The Flood, Feel, Kill Some Day, The Wheel, Plan #1
Encore 1: Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Hyena, You Lied
Encore 2: Neverland, Hogwash

Notes: A very long show -- AMAZING! "Un chien" clocks in about half an hour. "The wheel" is simply grand: Øyvind spends seven full minutes repeating this only 4-notes distorted chord over a devastating bass and a powerful, doomish drumming. For the finale they empty that wall of sound, get mellow for 30 seconds and go into the final part, again a wall of sound, with Snah and Øyvind proposing the final piano-part of the original song. Before the second encore Bent mentions that "...playing here in Rimini is always an extraordinary experience" [this is the ninth time the band plays at Velvet]. "Hoghwash" is comprised of about 20 minutes of loops and noises. The central jam part is minimalistic, reminding on the improvisation inside the legendary version of "My best friend" from Barcelona 18.04.2002. It is in this jam that Jacco stars as a great improviser.

12.05.2006 -- New Age, Treviso, Italy [130 min]
Set: Kill Devil Hills -> The Ace -> Devil Dog, Manmower, Bonny Lee -> Blueberry Daydream -> Bonny Lee -> You lose, Sideway Spiral III -> Critical Mass, Sail On, Neverland, Hey Jane, No Evil, Kill Some Day, You lied -> Hyena
Encore 1: L.T.E.C. -> Tristano
Encore 2: Feel

Notes: Grandissimo concerto, spettacolari! Many unusual segues tonight. The band rocks hard. There are slight issues with the sound in the beginning but it improves as they go along. The fast alternative version of "Blueberry daydream" is jammed into "Bonny Lee". It's the only time "Blueberry daydream" appears during this tour. The fast arrangement hadn't been playd since 1995. This is the second time this tour that "Tristano" is played (first time in Halden 27.04.2006), it's a 20 minute psychedelic version, amazing! Other highlights include "Manmower", "Kill some day" & "You lose". The latter features a growing ending: melodic & powerful.

14.05.2006 -- Centralstation, Darmstadt, Germany [155 min]
Attendance: 800
Set: Sideway Spiral III, No Evil -> Hey Jane, Triggerman -> Manmower -> Triggerman, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Hyena -> You lied -> The wheel -> Plan #1
Encore 1: Vanishing Point, Sail On, Neverland
Encore 2: Jam -> Un Chien D'Espace -> Timothy In The Magic City -> Un Chien D'Espace

Notes: This is the last show of the tour & the band makes it a worthy & inspired final concert. The audience enjoys a PERFECT sound, this might very well be one of the clearest & most detailed sounds ever produced at a Motorpsycho show, simply stunning! Generally this is a great venue, which allows the band to stage a really wide-screen Motorpsycho show. The mood is geat & relaxed tonight, smiles everywhere as well as lots of interaction & interplay between all players. Before "Triggerman" Bent says they will try something they haven't tried before & that it might take a while. Jokingly he encourages the audience to go to the bar if it might take too long. Off they go into an unpractised & most wonderful "Triggerman/Manmower"-sandwich, with fluent & tender segues. This 22 minute jam climaxes in a beautiful "Manmower"-solo, THE most moving moment of the show, not of this world! "Kill devil Hills -> Devil dog" is apocalyptic, with even more feedback than usual & they nail every note! Jacco gets an introduction during an extended drum-break in "You lied". "The wheel" is very well-developped. Patiently & carefully they jam through the first passages before they introduce the main riff for a massive neverending jam, which is dominated by Snah but Bent adds a lot of extra lyrics & the jam also takes some really unexpected turns. This version clocks in 26 minutes. When they return for the first encore Bent jokingly demands that the audience gives them "the traditional German line U-A-E", making the crowd give them another short "Zugabe"-chant. He then mentions that this is the last night of the tour & adds that "first we will rock out some more & then we will space out a bit more, so everybody hang loose". The first encore rocks competently indeed, the band is very animated. By the time they return to the stage to perform a 35 minute version of "Un chien" they have captivated every listener, the whole place listens quietly & amazed. This version of "Un chien" is amazingly altered & jammed out, they add new turns & twists everywhere & the improvisation goes through several inspired ideas. Even before the very intro the band creates a 7 minutes space improvisation that picks up some of the themes that have introed "Un chien" so far. The main jam starts off with the by now familiar riff (i.e. also performed in Berlin) but soon the band telepathically goes through clearly distinct ideas, passages, tempi within the blink of an eye. One of the jams inside this most amazing "Un chien" is indeed "Timothy in the magic city", complete with lyrics. Towards the end of the suite they go into an extremely fast-paced jam. Instead of kicking back in with the main theme after Bent has sung the second lyrics Snah suddenly & puzzingly strums half a minute of real chaos guitar & THEN they go back into "Un chien" with all its might. Although the guitars are extremely out of tune in the end they extend the ending of this extraordinarily inspired, varied, rich & long "Un chien", which continues a string of extremely spaced out shows in Darmstadt (compare 2000 & 2001). On the setlist but not played: "Feel". A great ending to a great tour!

04.08.2006 -- Haldern Pop Festival, Rees-Haldern, Germany [75 min]
Attendance: 7500
Set: New song, Hey Jane, No Evil, Triggerman, In The Family, Starmelt/lovelight, Neverland, Manmower, Kill Devil Hills -> Devil Dog, Hyena, You Lied

Notes: At this show, the first of three summer festival shows in 2006, Øyvind is not with the band, they rock as a trio. It's obvious they need a little more practice as a three-piece, there are minor mistakes and a major one when Jacco goes into "Hyena" too early during the outro of "Devil Dog". Most of the songs work out nicely, are played harder and less varied than on the recent tour - even "Manmower" (around 7 minutes). Fine jams from Snah here and there. Some songs & moments are harder/rougher than on the latest tour though, when Snah/Bent took up some things Øyvind did, or they simply compress the songs to strings'n'skins! The guys seem to have a good time although the outer circumstances are quite difficult in muddy underwater Haldern: after a sunny day heavy rain hits Haldern, resulting in up to 10 cm standing water on the grounds. No more rain during the show, but hard conditions- they rock the limited but thankful crowd all the same -- what a life! The new song is a six minute riffrockpop-hit. "Hey Jane" & "In the family" were aired on local radio station 1Live two days after the concert. "Manmower", "Kill devil hills -> Devil dog", "Triggerman" & "You lied" were aired on german TV in the infamous Rockpalast music program.

10.08.2006 -- Oyafestival, Middelalderparken, Oslo, Norway [71 min]
Attendance: ~900o
Set: Manmower -> The Wheel, No Evil, Hey, Jane, Starmelt/lovelight, Sail On, In the Family, Kill Devil Hills, Hyena, You Lied, Neverland

Notes: This show, the only Norwegian summer appearance, they perfom as a quartet again, Øyvind rejoins them. A very good & rocking show, though they deliver a hit-parade to meet the needs of a festival crowd. The concert was broadcastcast via a variety of media: Norwegian tv channel NRK repeatedly aired it on tv, radio & the internet, the webcast-stream can be accessed here. They take the stage during sunset, opening with an epic combination of "Manmower -> The wheel" (25 min), leaving away the coda to "Manmower" due to a malfunction in Oyvind's equipment. Bent quotes The Grateful Dead's "The Wheel" in "The Wheel": "The wheel is turning and you can't hold on, can't go back and you can't stand still..". "Kill devil hills" is slightly rearrangend with some nice new details by Øyvind. "Devil Dog" is being aborted by Bent. The audience screams for more long after they had left the stage after "Neverland".

12.08.2006 -- For Noise Festival, Pully, Switzerland [~70 min]
Soundcheck: New Song, Can't Explain, Voodoo Chile-jam
Set
: Hogwash, Coalmine Pony, No Evil -> Hey, Jane, New Song, Starmelt Lovelight, In the Family, Triggerman -> Manmower -> The Wheel -> Devil Dog
Encore: Hyena -> You Lied, Neverland

Notes: Motorpsycho's third of three summer festival performances in 2006. They perform as a trio, just like in Haldern. Heavy rain occurs during this show, the sound is muddy, but the band plays a good show nontheless. The new song is as yet untitled according to Bent (and is called "insert songtitle" on Snah's setlist). A slow okay-ish start to the concert turns into a solid middle part, and then turns into sheer magic by the time they perform "Triggerman". "The Wheel" is over 20 minutes long, very noisy in parts. Bent talks about losing a bass guitar in transit due to "terror bullshit", says Bent: "Thanks so much. I would have never stood in the rain for 1.5 hours for any band." Snah refers to another band on the festival's line up: "Celtic Frost - heroes of our Childhood."; Bent watched the Celtic Frost performance from side-stage.

30.08.2006 -- Blæst, Trondheim, Norway
Set: [included parts or quotes of] Hogwash, Only shallow (by My Bloody Valentine), plus tunes by Jimi Hendrix, The Police.

Notes: Psychonauts residing in or near Trondheim were treated to an extraordinary event: the Trondheim Jazzfestival hosts an Improvisation-Gig at Blæst by Motorpsycho-collaborator, vibraphonist & sound-artist Øyvind Brandtsegg supported by a small ensemble of musicians among them Bent & Snah! The line-up featured:

Øyvind Brandtsegg - Marimba Lumina / Csound
Thomas T. Dahl - git
Arve Henriksen - trpt
Kenneth Kapstad - dr
Mattis Kleppen - b
Hans Magnus Ryan - git
Bent Sæther - b

The festival's event page described the event as follows:

"Ø. B. has got a 'cannon team' of Norwegian musicians for this evening! In order to attain the perfect gunpowder mixture he has selected musicians who each have their own unique view on improvisation and energy. Newly written material gets mixed with 'standards' who are by no means taken from the traditional jazz repertoir.

The energy of rock & the playfulness of jazz makes the boundaries for compositional momentums taken from contemporary music [sic!]. Brandtsegg has an art scholarship at the University in Trondheim, and is exploring the use of compositional techniques when improvising. His live-sampler 'ImproSculpt', when it was released, established a new standard for level and complexity for electronic instruments.

This work has been commisioned with support from the Norwegian culture-council (Norsk Kulturråd)."

This show was all improvised. As an Adressa review put it: "The night started with a series of heavy bumps followed by an inferno of noise before the piece took a new direction. Lots of dynamics made the tunes never static, there was always a surprise waiting. A progrock part suddenly turning into reggea with Arve Hendriksens trumpet on top. Or when Snah quoted Hogwash in the beginning of his solo and Arve Hendriksen lays a distorted screaming vocal on top of a psycedelic passage..." The show left attendees without words. There were quotes of the artists mentioned in the "setlist", not any real renditions of songs. Snah introduces his part of the improvisation/solo by quoting "Hogwash". Says one attendee: "It was magic, lots of smiling jazz loving vinos and beer drinking rockers after the show. I was standing in the first row and it was exciting to see them communicate during the performance, it was not easy to see/hear what was rehearsed and what was improv. I saw a bit of Snah's setlist, but it was kind of cryptic;...NO...Miles...Stem(tune)...Only Shallow...NON...". The paper edition of the Adressa-reciew (01.09.2006) states that a 24-track recording was successfully commited to tape. Also mentioned in that article was a possibility of a tour, it quotes Brandtsegg: "If anyone wants to send us on a tour, we will probably say yes, but since we are all pretty busy at the moment, someone else has to organize it".

If you got more info regarding this show, particularly a recording, please, please, please get in touch via e-mail! Thanks!
